Devblog #1 - The Beginning

The first thing I needed to tackle for this game was what it is going to be. To do so I ended up just writing down words on a whiteboard until I had a fairly long enough list that I could create something out of. Once I had this list I began thinking of what I could do with it.

After some deliberation and thinking of other games I've played, I ended up settling on a gladiator-style arena battle game. I took inspiration from games like Furi and Hades, and the arena part of the movie Thor: Ragnarok when they are on Sakaar. With this core concept in mind I moved onto thinking about the core gameplay mechanics for the player and how I wanted the combat to feel and what I wanted the player to be able to do.

I wanted to give the player a lot of options to choose from in regards to how they approached a fight, and so I decided on a mix of melee and ranged attack, and then for defensive options they can block and dash. This also means fights can have more mechanics to them to force the player into utilizing everything at their disposal instead of focusing on just one thing.

With these things decided I'm now setting out to create the player's mechanics and get that up and running, and then following that up with the basic elements of the first enemy in the arena.
